Including People with Disabilities: Public Health Workforce Competencies

Including People with Disabilities: Public Health Workforce Competencies provides foundational knowledge about the relationship between public health programs and health outcomes among people with disabilities, and are primarily designed for professionals already working in the public health field but can also be used for public health workforce training.

These Training Modules adapt the Including People with Disabilities: Public Health Workforce Competencies and were created to provide public health professionals with foundational knowledge on ID and other disabilities, and provide Competencies to aide in the inclusion of people with disabilities in public health planning and health promotion efforts. Also included are strategies and real world examples for implementation. More information on the Competencies can be found at: http://www.disabilityinpublichealth.org

Course Learning Objectives

  1. Describe intellectual and other disabilities, as associated chronic and secondary health issues
  2. Discuss health disparities people with disabilities may experience and emerging issues
  3. Describe the Competencies and learning objectives
  4. Discuss ways to implement the Competencies within your discipline
  5. Use the Competencies to train others on how to include people with disabilities in planning

This course is comprised of 4 individual training modules. Modules 1-4 have practice and final quizzes. The Practice Quiz helps the user discern their baseline knowledge and will not be scored. The user can take the practice quiz once during the session. The Final Quiz is to assess if the user has fully understood the content. A score of at least 75% is needed to pass and receive a certificate of completion. If a passing score is not achieved on the first try, the quiz can be taken up to 3 times during the session. Participant will receive a certificate of participation after completing each module, for a total of 4 certificates.

Module 1: Introduction - Provides an overview of the Competencies, definitions of intellectual and other disabilities, and the chronic and secondary health issues of people with disabilities.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize the significance of disability in public health
  2. Describe the different definitions of disability
  3. Describe the prevalence of adults with Intellectual Disability (ID) in the U.S.
  4. Define and describe the chronic and secondary health conditions associated with disability

Module 2: Health Disparities and Emerging Issues - Provides information on health disparities that people with disabilities may face and emerging issues for this population.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the health disparities faced by people with Intellectual Disability (ID)
  2. Describe the need for health promotion for people with ID
  3. Describe the need for including people with ID in planning public health programs and events
  4. Discuss emerging issues for people with intellectual and other disabilities Online

Module 3: The Competencies - Provides an overview of the Competencies, learning objectives and strategies for implementation.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Discuss the four (4) Competencies and associated Learning Objectives
  2. Review strategies for implementation Online

Module 4: Putting it all Together - Provides information on how to implement the Competencies within your own discipline.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Review strategies for implementation
  2. Discuss ways to implement the Competencies into your current work
