Alcohol use among women of childbearing age presents many challenges to health care professionals. The medical, obstetrical, and neonatal complications associated with alcohol use during pregnancy are well established. Yet current messaging seems to be moving away from "No safe amount", to "A small amount is OK." In this presentation, Susan Kendig who is representing AWHONN, a national partner on the FASD Prevention Project, provides an overview of alcohol dependence from a women's health perspective, with emphasis on alcohol use during pregnancy. Assessment strategies to identify women at risk for or currently using alcohol in pregnancy, and mechanisms to facilitate brief interventions and referrals are presented. Additionally, participants will consider alternate messages that encourage pregnant women to informed decisions about alcohol use in pregnancy.
