Dental and Oral Health for Individuals with IDD

Research has shown that good oral care is an essential part of good overall health, yet it is one of the most overlooked aspects of daily hygiene for many individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, particularly those living in residential settings. The single most important thing you can do to maintain healthy teeth and gums and prevent dental pain in the individuals you support is not to just bring them to the dentist but to support good home care, which includes daily brushing. Your knowledge of good oral hygiene and its many benefits can make a tremendous difference for an individual’s short- and long-term quality of life. This course will introduce you to the components of a healthy mouth and good oral hygiene. It provides information about proper tooth brushing techniques and strategies to support care for people with a range of disabilities both at home and when preparing for a dental visit. Armed with this information and an appreciation for the importance of good oral health care, you will be able to support individuals to reach their highest health potential and remain free of oral pain.
